The Google Business Profile 2026 Playbook by Industry

How small businesses in different industries should run their Google Business Profile in 2026. Photos, posts, attributes, services, and the optimization that drives calls and store visits.

The Google Business Profile (GBP) is the single highest-leverage local marketing asset most small businesses have, and the one most small businesses underuse. The basic checklist (name, address, phone, hours) is table stakes. The 2026 playbook for the businesses that win the local pack and the local-finder is more specific.

This is the industry-by-industry version of what we recommend at AdsTalent for the highest-leverage GBP optimization.

Service businesses (plumbing, HVAC, roofing, electrical, contractors)

  • Services: every distinct service you sell, listed individually, with a few sentences of description per service. Most service businesses list two or three and leave it there. Adding the full service catalog typically lifts impressions meaningfully.
  • Photos: photos of your team, your trucks, and completed work. Photos of finished installations and "before/after" sets perform especially well.
  • Posts: weekly or biweekly. Service highlights, seasonal reminders (HVAC tune-ups in spring, gutter cleaning in fall), and recent project highlights.
  • Q&A: pre-seed common questions (pricing range, service area, emergency availability) and answer them yourself.
  • Reviews: the single highest-leverage signal. Ask every completed job.

Restaurants and food service

  • Menu: enter the menu directly into Google through the menu attribute, not just as a link to your website.
  • Photos: food photos (lots of them, refreshed often), interior photos, and exterior photos. The plate-up photo is the conversion event.
  • Posts: specials, events, new menu items, weekly.
  • Reservations: integrate with whatever reservation system you use so the "Reserve a Table" button actually works.
  • Attributes: dietary attributes (vegetarian, gluten-free, vegan options), payment methods, atmosphere attributes.

Healthcare practices

  • Services: each procedure or service you offer, listed individually. For specialty practices, this is where you signal expertise.
  • Photos: facility photos, equipment photos, team photos. Most healthcare GBPs are visually empty.
  • Posts: educational content, new service announcements, seasonal health reminders.
  • Health & safety attributes: insurance accepted, languages spoken, accessibility features.
  • Appointment booking: integrate with whatever scheduling tool you use.

Retail stores

  • Products: enter your product catalog through the products feature for shopping search visibility.
  • Photos: product photos, in-store photos, refreshed seasonally.
  • Posts: weekly product highlights, seasonal sales, new arrivals.
  • Attributes: payment methods, accessibility, in-store pickup, curbside pickup, returns policy.
  • Reviews: post-purchase review requests through your point of sale system.

Real estate, financial services, law firms, insurance

These industries have a different GBP economics. The customer journey is longer, conversion is by phone or in-person consultation, and the profile's job is signaling trust.

  • Services: each practice area, line of business, or service category, listed individually.
  • Photos: team photos and office photos. The "trust signal" is what these GBPs are for.
  • Posts: educational content about your category. Legal updates, market updates, financial planning topics.
  • Q&A: pre-seed the questions prospects ask and answer them yourself.
  • Reviews: more valuable per review than any other industry. Build the program.

The constant across every industry

Three things hold across every category:

  1. Photos refreshed often move impressions more than anything else.
  2. Posts published consistently signal an active business, which the algorithm rewards.
  3. Reviews acquired systematically are the single highest-leverage signal you can build.

Run those three loops continuously and the rest of the optimization compounds on top.
